Sudbury Graphic Con Signing

SF Canada member Mark Leslie will be at Sudbury Graphic Con on Saturday June 10th, signing copies of his books Spooky Sudbury, Haunted Hamilton, Creepy Capital, Tomes of Terror, Evasion, I, Death, One Hand Screaming and A Canadian Werewolf in New York, among a few other titles.

Mark has also been assigned as a regular editor for the Fiction River anthology series (Series Editors Kristine Kathryn Rusch and Dean Wesley Smith) from WMG Publishing. This is a closed-invite anthology series where the issues are developed from an intense ten-day long writing/editing workshop that takes place annually on the Oregon Coast. His first issue of the anthology series comes out at the end of June:  Fiction River #23: Editor’s Choice

Editing an anthology can prove tricky business. Wonderful stories sometimes find themselves on the rejection pile simply because they do not fit in the editor’s vision of that anthology. So, editor Mark Leslie decided to save some of those amazing stories for this latest volume of Fiction River: Editor’s Choice. These tales run the gamut from YA fantasy to cozy crime to slipstream to horror. And they represent the incredible diversity of styles, voices, and genre that inspired Adventures Fantastic to call Fiction River “one of the best and most exciting publications in the field today.”

Attend ACCSFF ’17!

Interested in the academic side of Canadian Science Fiction and Fantasy? Plan to attend the 2017 ACCSFF, June 2-3!

The conference will feature papers on Arrival, Lost Girls, SF music, We Stand on Guard, Larissa Lai, Emily St. John Mandel, Peter Watts, Spider Robinson, Guy Gavriel Kay, Native-Canadian SF, and more. Keynote address speakers will be Madeline Ashby, author of Canada Reads Finalist Company Town, and Dominick Grace, author of The Science Fiction of Phyllis Gotlieb.

The Meaning of Water

For those of you in the Toronto area and interested in the environment and water, I am hosting a Water Event and book launch of my recently released book “Water Is…” on June 12th (Sunday) at Islington Golf Course (1-5pm) in Etobicoke (near Islington and Dundas W).

Just to entice you, we start with a blessing of Mimico Creek–known to be unruly at times–by a Mississauga nation knowledge keeper. That will be followed by a short talk about Mimico watershed by a TRCA naturalist. Then we move inside to mix and meet. Councillor Tovey will talk about the coolest things he is doing about city planning and water. Then we will have some awesome poetry. Tasnim Jivaji will exhibit her water art and bazillion other interesting people will be there … including you.

Bring family, friends, anyone who cares about water… Then let Debby know with an RSVP: debby@mdgassociates.com.

Writers are encouraged to bring their work and promo material; there will be a show and tell table and plenty of time to mix and share.

Reading and Discussion

K.V. Johansen at LonCon 3

LonCon3K.V. Johansen will be attending LONCON 3 (the 72nd World Science Fiction Convention) in London UK, from August 14-18, where she will be on panels discussing “Crossing Boundaries: Histories of International SF/F for Children”, “Sense of Wonder in Children’s SF”, and “YA Fiction: The History of a Genre”, as well as being available at a kaffeeklatsch where readers and writers can meet.

Right before LONCON, Johansen will be a class leader at the Science Fiction Foundation’s annual Masterclass in Science Fiction Criticism, held at the Royal Observatory, Greenwich, August 11-13.

Johansen’s latest novel, The Leopard, was published in June by Pyr, to be followed in December by part two of the epic fantasy: The Lady.

Eileen Kernaghan launches Sophie, in Shadow

Sophie, In Shadow

Eileen Kernaghan’s new YA/teen historical fantasy, Sophie, in Shadow, will be launched on May 10 at the Arts Council of New Westminster’s gallery in Queens Park. The time is 1:30 p.m.

Sophie, in Shadow, set in India under the Raj, continues a narrative which began twenty-five years earlier in Wild Talent: a Novel of the Supernatural. It’s 1914. Sixteen year old Sophie Pritchard, orphaned two years earlier by the sinking of SS Titanic, is about to begin a new life in British India. For Sophie, still devastated by her parents’ death, India proves a dangerous environment. Kidnapping, enemy spies and terrorist plots play their parts against the background of a world at war and growing unrest in the Indian subcontinent.
