September 28, 2021-

Novel Surgery with Susan Forest

SF Canada member and Aurora-Award-winning novelist Susan Forest will be teaching an 8-week, in-person course on the art and craft of revision at the Alexandra Writers’ Centre in Calgary. Students should have a “finished” manuscript in hand and be prepared to analyze its strengths and weaknesses, rebuild theme and character arcs, ask tough questions about logic and motivation, and cut, add, and move scenes around for greatest punch. Fall 2021 Richmond Hill Speaker Series

Limnologist and aquatic ecologist Nina Munteanu will be the first speaker of the prestigious Richmond Speaker series. On September 23, she will deliver a one-hour lecture followed by a one-hour Q&A. Her work explores the many dimensions of water; her book Water Is…The Meaning of Water was Margaret Atwood’s first choice in the New York Times ‘Year in Reading.’ To buy tickets at Early Bird prices, purchase tickets on-line before September 7th. Markets

On Spec, the Canadian Magazine of the Fantastic, will have an open submissions period from September 1 – September 30, 2021. The magazine is open to speculative poetry and short stories under 6000 words, with a preference for work by Canadian citizens and permanent residents. Nothing Without Us Too, an anthology of speculative fiction edited by SF Canada members Cait Gordon and Kohenet Talia C. Johnson, will open for submissions on September 30, 2021. Teaser submission guidelines have been released for those who might like to submit when the reading period begins in October. Although the majority of accepted stories will be by authors who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents, the authors welcome writers from across the disability, mental illness, developmental disabilities, neurodiversity, Blind, and d/Deaf spectrums, and welcome those who manage what are known as “invisible” and “visible” disabilities and/or chronic conditions. Neo-Opsis Science Fiction Magazine will have an open submissions period for speculative poetry and fiction from September 15, 2021 to October 1, 2021. For specific instructions on how to submit, see THIS LINK.

In light of the impact of COVID-19 on our community of writers across Canada, SF Canada and Canadian Authors have jointly decided to offer a series of webinars at no charge to all writers, whether or not they are members of either organization.

Douglas Smith Rights & Reprints Workshop

SF Canada member Douglas Smith will be offering an online workshop via Cat Rambo’s “Rambo Academy” on selling reprints and other ways to leverage your short fiction. The workshop is scheduled for Saturday, July 21 and registration information is available here.

What do you do with a story after it’s been published? In this workshop, multi-award-winning Canadian writer Douglas Smith, whose work has been published in twenty-six languages and thirty-two countries, discusses story rights and licensing, including language, geography, media (print, electronic, audio), and occurrence rights (first rights and reprints), and how to sell reprints to markets you may be overlooking, including audio and international foreign language markets. The author of Playing the Short Game: How to Market & Sell Short Fiction, Smith will give you the vocabulary and knowledge you need to make more from your short fiction.

In other news, Douglas’ shapeshifter story “Out of the Light” will be reprinted in the upcoming antho “Crazy Town” from Rogue Blades Entertainment.

K.V. Johansen at LonCon 3

LonCon3K.V. Johansen will be attending LONCON 3 (the 72nd World Science Fiction Convention) in London UK, from August 14-18, where she will be on panels discussing “Crossing Boundaries: Histories of International SF/F for Children”, “Sense of Wonder in Children’s SF”, and “YA Fiction: The History of a Genre”, as well as being available at a kaffeeklatsch where readers and writers can meet.

Right before LONCON, Johansen will be a class leader at the Science Fiction Foundation’s annual Masterclass in Science Fiction Criticism, held at the Royal Observatory, Greenwich, August 11-13.

Johansen’s latest novel, The Leopard, was published in June by Pyr, to be followed in December by part two of the epic fantasy: The Lady.

Nina Munteanu Teaching Science Fiction Writing at George Brown College This Fall

George Brown CollegeThis fall Nina Munteanu will be teaching a course on how to write science fiction at George Brown College in Toronto.

The 12 week course that starts on Wednesday September 18th (6:15 to 9:15 pm) through to December 4th 2013 will focus on writing science fiction toward publication.

The Course will explore the essential tools used in the genre, including:

  • world building
  • premise and story promise
  • storyboarding
  • plot approaches
  • research
  • ideas
  • theme
  • language and style
  • promotion and marketing

The downtown George Brown campus is located on King Street in the heart of downtown Toronto.

Nina Munteanu Teaching in Nova Scotia

nina-waterfrontNina Munteanu, author of the Darwin duology, will be in Nova Scotia March 2011, teaching several writing workshops in Halifax and the South Shore.
She will also be speaking in several Halifax schools and will be doing readings at libraries. See her website for locations.
